AI agent

In short

An AI agent is software that uses a language model to understand a request, find the information it needs and respond or act within rules set by its owner. In customer service it reads a customer's message, answers from the business's knowledge, and hands the conversation to a person when it should.

An AI agent is software that uses a language model to understand what someone asks, find the information it needs and respond, or act, within rules its owner sets. The word became common because chatbots that only answered started doing more: following instructions about when to reply, handing a chat to a person, or using other tools. There is no single agreed definition. This entry explains what an AI agent is, how it differs from a chatbot, an example from an online store, and what to watch for.

What is an AI agent

An AI agent combines three things:

  • A language model: it reads free text, typos and several questions in one message.
  • Knowledge: the information it may answer from, such as policies, FAQs and products.
  • Rules: instructions about what it may promise, when it replies and when it stops.

What makes it an "agent" rather than a plain chatbot is that it does something beyond replying, such as passing the conversation to a person.

AI agent vs chatbot

A rules chatbot follows a menu. An AI chatbot writes answers. An AI agent adds behaviour. The full comparison is in the guide to AI agent vs chatbot, and the chatbot entry covers the types.

Example: a customer service agent

A customer writes to a clothing store on WhatsApp: "I ordered a medium yesterday, can I switch to a large?" The agent looks in its knowledge base, finds the exchange policy and replies that sizes can be changed until the order ships. It does not read orders, so it asks for the order number and passes the chat to the team.

Risks and limits

  • Confident wrong answers: limit the agent to the business's own knowledge.
  • Outdated knowledge: the agent repeats an old price or policy as fact.
  • Live data: unless it is connected to orders and stock, it cannot know where a parcel is.
  • Money decisions: refunds and compensation stay with a person.

AI agents in StoreChart

StoreChart has an AI chatbot for your website and a WhatsApp AI agent. Both answer from a knowledge base you control, and the WhatsApp agent runs in modes you set per chat.

Frequently asked questions

AI agent vs chatbot: what is the difference?

A chatbot mainly answers messages. An AI agent also follows rules about behaviour and can act, for example by handing a chat to a person. The terms overlap, and vendors use them loosely.

Can an AI agent make mistakes?

Yes. A language model can write an answer that sounds right and is wrong, especially when the information is missing. That is why a business agent should answer only from the business's knowledge and say plainly when it does not know.

Does an AI agent need to be trained?

Not in the technical sense for most business tools. You give it knowledge, such as a scan of your site, approved answers and rules, and keep that knowledge accurate.
